UNit 2/3 - Documentary assigment 2 :Treatment and Research diary
The main audience for my documentary would be people aged 7 and above as this is the age in which most bullying starts at and people are able to understand it better being older and so forth, i also am aiming at getting a large audience of people to be more informed about bullying and how big the issue has become in past years and that something needs to be done about it now as it has already caused lots of children to take their own lives, this will help lots of different generations understand bullying and how it not just affects the person being bullied but how it also affects the family of the person and how it can drive them to do drastic things like suicide and murder and turn good kids into bad ones when it is not their faults.
I feel that my documentary will be different from the other ones about bully as it is being made by peers and not adults so its gives an honest look into what children act like when adults are not around and what it is really like when adults don't see which gives them a real flavor of what actually happens and how bad it is. i also would like to hopefully get a couple of experts in to talk about what can happen over time and what happens in the different stages of bullying, i would also like to maybe contact someone which has been bullied and get them to tell their story about how it affect their life in different ways and talk about how big of an impact it had on them.
The documentary will focus on lots of different interviews and facts about bullying mostly just trying to inform people with a very low level knowledge of bullying and don't really think that it is a big deal which should be ignored to focus on more important matters, this is also going to try and get bullying to be a much bigger deal and get something to actually change instead of just ignoring it and hoping it will go away in time which isnt there, i will also hopefully get into contact with some organizations who help with bully and try to make a difference and get quotes and interviews off them and try and get them to explain how bad bullying has actually become and the serious outcomes which it can have on people who are continually bullied throughout their life and what drastic things it can force them to do.
The main research technique which i used was to watch documentaries similar to the one which i was planning on bullying, this documentary being on bullying i watched the critically acclaimed "Bully Project" which follows young children all aged around 13 to 16 and tells there story and puts the audience into their world of constantly being bullied and how it affects not only their own life but the lives of family members and close friends, watching the bully project was primary and secondary research as it was watching somebody else gather information. Watching the bully project really gave me lots of good ideas for the documentary on bully which i wanted to do apart from not interviewing any experts on the topic as i want it to be more basic so that everybody understands what the documentary is about and understands how much of a change is needed, The techmique i used for this was the most effective as it got me the most results which were more accurate than looking online which some of the infomation could of been modified by someone to make it wrong which would then have a riple affect on the documentary making the infomation which is used to be wrong and therefore causing the documentary to look bad and very unprofessinal.

The anti bullying corrilation is a group of lots of orginizations and individuals working together to stop bullying and create safe and fun enviroments for all children, The ABA orginise anti bullying weeks each year for the past few years to draw attention to the very pressing matter of bullying and how bad it has actually gotten in the past years. this is a qoute from the APA "We can provide advice and expertise in relation to all forms of bullying between children and young people." saying what they do for children when being bullied.

Cyber bullying:
*people can be bullied from any locations 24/7
*Cyber bullying is harder to notice if it is happening to someone as no physical scars are left.
*The cyber side of things may be confusing for parents who are not very modern and up to date with things
Books
Wonder, this book tells people about what a boys life is like when he has a phyical disablity and has his first time being in normal school.
the only reason I’m not ordinary is that no one else sees me that way." this quote is a short extract from the book wonder and tells people a little about why the boy is bullied, which is because of his phyical disablity.

This is a link from usa today documenting how one 12 yearold girl from florida was bullied into killing herself, this shows how bad bullying someone can actually become and how much it can affect someones life and family also.
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13586750-bully
This book talks about what life is like for a girl when she starts school and how here first experience of school was ruined by people bullying her and picking on her etc. ..... this tells people about what here experiences were and how she coped with them every day. One's dignity may be assaulted, vandalized and cruelly mocked, but it can never be taken away unless it is surrendered.” from Michael j fox talking about bully.
The bully project
The bully project was a documentary directed by Lee hirsch and is set across america focusing on three different children and how bullying affects there lives, There documetary feauters many different technuiqe which are seen in lots of other documentaries such as interveiws with main people for instance the father of someone who is getting bullied.another key feature which is used is filming lots of normal things which happen on a day to day school basis such as getting the bus to school, walking through the corridoors. One of the main aims of this documentary is to get people to acsept that bullying is a very big issue which needs something to be done about it and can cause children to do horrific things to themsleves. This documentary does that very well by showing how this is happening all around america to all types of children black or white male or female gay or straight.
Contribuations
The bully project was filmed at schools all across america so they would of had to of got clearance from the schools to film and from the parents of the children to tell the public about what there child faces everyday.
In this particular documenatry the parents would be more than willing to let the director come and film there lives and how the bullying affects there family and not just the one who is being bullied, for the schools however i feel they would not of been on board with letting them come into the school and making it look bad by showing what school life is really like for the children and showing that they are not doing much to stop what is happening everyday.
How useful was the infomation
i feel that the documentary is very useful to the documentary idea as it shows alot of good techniques to get across to all age groups and not just adults as it shows what it is like from the pov of the child and not just the parent so you get a better feel and understanding of what is happening to children in modern day school and how bad things can actually get for children if nothing is done, this also educates lots of people who think that bullying is not a big issue and think it is just "boys being boys" to qoute the documentary.

Unit 2/3 - Documentary Research methods
There are two different types of reshearch which are Qualative and Quantative, Qualitive reshearch is to do with human behaviour and reasons why people do what they do or choose what they choose etc .... the main study of this type of reshearch is usally used to see why people make different decsions for example going to different shops like kfc instead of mcdonalds and tesco instead of asda. This method is usally used on a large audience to get the most acurate results possible from a wide variety of people.
A good example of Qualative data would be a review of a film from different people or a disscusion about something what they have seen recently.
The other type of reshearch is Quantative which focuses around numbers and numerical data like of a tally graph or a survey percentage etc.... the main purpose of quantative data is to get more accurate data so that the data gathered is more acurate.
A good example of this would be working out satistics for a tally on how many people choose scary films over action films.
The advantages of qualitive data over quantitive data would be that the results can change something which is currently in production and completly change a project which was going to fail to a project whihc will be a great success just by some feedback from a test audience. another advantage over quantitive data would be that lots of infomation can be gathered quickly from lots of different people with a wide variety of groups such as old, young, male, gay and straight.
The advantages of quantitive data over qualitive would be that it is very easy to get accurate results quicky as it is very clear and easy to extrract the data from the survey, another advantage of quantitive data is that it is very accurate so not lots is needed as even a small amount would be very useful to any project and could help the project futher its self in development.
The disadvantages of qualitive data are it can be tricky to get the data from the graph as there may be lots and it may get confusing and some of the data may be lost during the extaction, another disadvantage is that i can be less viable or true as many people may lie on as they may feel pressured into giving an answer the person who is looking for the results may want them to give.
The disadvantages of quantitive data are that the results which are gathered are not very accurate and therefore dont give much infomation about what you are looking into with the survey or questionare, another disadvantage would be that it doesnt give you infomation which you can keep to use on future projects as the infomation will have probably changed by the time a new production is started.
Primary Research : Primary research is research what you do your self this is when you do the interveiws and the questionares to people and you gather the facts yourself and dont get them from someone else or of the internet.
Secondary Research : Secondary research is research which is done by somebody else or has been such as infomation on the internet like wikipedia or yahoo answers or documentaries done by other people on a similar topic to the one which you are producing.
The advantages of primary research is that it would not be false so you could trust primary as it would be research you have found so you know that it is true and not going to cause the documentary look bad by having wrong infomation.
The advantages of secondary research is that it is alot easier to get and comes in a much larger form that primary which is much more convinent as if you are short of time and need lots of research it can help alot.
The disadvantages of using primary research is that it takes a decent amount of time to get a decent amount of data which can be bad if you need the infomation quickly and you dont have the time to wait.
The disadvantages of using secondary research is that it can be false or could of been changed by someone to make it wrong and then make the documentary look bad as it doesnt have the correct infomation about the subject which it is about and will lose lots of the audience.
Market Research
Market research is focused on the market audience and who the thing which is being made is aimed at, this can change the product if it is being aimed at a spesific audience, The main parts of market research are social and opinions of people. The main parts of this research are aimed at marketing the product and finding out the best ways to sell the product and get the widest viriety of audience.
The advantages of using market research would be that it could help get people intrested in the documentary by finding out what they like and what the want to see in a documentary about bullying and what would make them go and see it.
The disadvantages would be that it is only focusing on how to get more people to watch and not the infomation that goes into the doumentary and what the best way is to inform people about bullying is.
Product Research
Product research is looking at similar products to the one which you are working on and looking on what made it sell and what made the product unique and how you can make the product your working on better and different to similar ones
The advantages of this is that your product will be different than products which are designed to be similar which makes your product stand out more and more profitable and succesfull.
The disadvantages of using product research would be it could also make your product bad by not using similar methods used by similar products which made it successfull it could make your product look bad and make it unsuccessull.
A good example of Qualative data would be a review of a film from different people or a disscusion about something what they have seen recently.

Unit 26 Assignment 3 :Harry Potter fandom
Harry Potter is a very mainstream fandom with a large majority group of people all following the same thing because it s popular and lots of people like it. this being one of the largest film franchises of all time is very easy to market as it has such a world wide audience which grows everyday, even though the film series has come to an end the franchise still continues to make an incredible amount of money and will probably continue to make amazing amounts of money for many years to come selling off costumes, dolls, dvd's and special editions etc...
As you can see in all of the poster all of the films are focused on marketing three of the main characters (Harry, Ron and Hermione) this is one of the key marketing techniques of the films, Nearer to the end of the film series more of the other characters from the film were added to market the film as there popularity in the the film industrustry rose and more people recognised them.
As you can see in this poster from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince six different posters were made for some of the main characters in the film to make lots of different harry potter fans may like as some may only like harry potter because of one individual character so only one of the six posters above may only appeal to them. individually.
Another key part of how they market such a big franchise as harry potter is by selling all kinds of merchandise from the film such as cloaks from the 4 houses, sweets and food which are sold in the series, wands, toys and props from the films like wands and brooms etc .....
Even though the film series has finished almost two years ago now the harry potter series still makes a very large amount of money outselling lots of new films which are coming out even today, harry potter is one of the worlds largest film franchises and will constantly be making money for many years to come as people are completely obsessed with harry potter.
The main ways which the harry potter films are marketed are in one specific order first there is a teaser poster, then there is a teaser trailer to get the audience to know about the new film and get them excited, next is usually there is either a website or main poster. For the final harry potter film there was a website which had a countdown to the films realise to give the die hard fans something to look forward to and to get them to but more stuff to do with harry potter and the main poster showing more of the characters and more about the film to get the fans even more excited for the film. Then after the main poster is released the main film trailer is released showing a clear plot line and showing all the characters and the release date of the film.
First Teaser
This was one of the first teaser posters for Harry potter as you can see the poster clearly shows a recognisable face instantly create an Iconographic image which all Harry potter fans will recognise as Harry and will know that it is a poster for Harry potter without even having to look at the posters words, this makes the fan group aware of what film is coming out as even though the face is very recognisable the main thing which the audience would recognise would be harry's glasses which is a very good psychographic technique, Something which was used it a lot of the later harry potter films was a very dark blue to grey color wash to set a very different mood for each film and to try an reach out to more audiences than just one specifically.
This was the main poster for Harry potter and the deathly hallows as you can see it shows much more of the characters, who they are, where they are and what they are doing. This poster also shows the date in which the film is going to be released on this gives the fans a date to look forward to and means that a trailer will be the main trailer.
Most of these late posters and trailers are more aimed at the regular audience and not the die hard fans which are excepted to buy all the merchandise and posters etc, A good example of how Psychographics are used is in harry potter and the half blood prince marketing, this was used by making 6 different posters for lots of the films main characters, reaching out to more people who like different characters in the film and not just the main 3 (Harry, Hermione, Ron) This was a very good use of Psychographics as it tries to reach to every single harry potter fan as some people prefer the film for some of the other characters or even just the actor that is playing the role, as if they like a specific actor they will want to go and see any film which they are in which is used in the several posters made for harry potter and the half blood prince.
This film series has such a wide fandom range is many people could relate to the young boy in the first film which got lots of young children hooked on the series right from the start, this made it easy to make merchandise as the main audience being young children lots of toys and games would be made and then the parents would buy them which then would start to get them hooked onto the series and by the second film introducing lots of the children's parents more into the film made parents relate also and then create a new fan base also many people would go and see the film just because some of the actors which were in the film such as Maggie smith and Richard Griffith's also the film series can connect with a wide audience as its different and unique but also you feel you can relate to one of the characters in the films.
The first two harry potter films were marketed at a much younger audience with much brighter colours being used and similar things like childish jokes and stuff etc .... , then the films took a much darker route and started getting more dark and erie as you can see from the trailer for the third film and the colour wash which is used not just on the film but the writing which says harry potter
This shows that now the film series is aimed at a much older fan base as it is obvious the films are getting more grown up and aimed at a older audience than the previous films.
It is important to create fans for a film so that the profit increases and then they are able to hype up the next film and get more money from the fans which have been recently turned to harry potter series and but lots of things todo with the film so that the next film can afford to be better have better posters and ways to advertise and also being able to pay for better sfx in the films and to make everything look more real and keep up with the latest tech so that the fans still enjoy the films and then keep buying stuff todo with the films including going to see them at the cinema when they come out and when they eventually come out onto dvd.
The general definition of a fan is someone who enjoys watching the films what they are a fan of in the case it being harry potter and also buying the merchandise todo with the film franchise which include the films which come to dvd, toys and figures which are realised todo with the films , the books todo with the films which are a big part of this particular franchise as most of the books came out before the films so people knew what was going to happen in the films which would of been a difficult process of taking the book to the big screen. Another big part of fandom is all about the actors who play the role of one of the beloved characters in the franchise and keeping up on genreral info what is going on in there life.
All this fandom and stuff leads back to making profit for the studio and the producers of the film so that they can carry on producing more films in the franchise, The harry potter films had a-bit of a head start against other films as some of the books had already been out for a few years before the films were announced so they already had quite a large fanbase from just the books which increased alot from the first films realise in 2001.
