What are the MPAA?
The MPAA are the ratings board on films for the united states of america, they are made up of six major film studios which are Universal, Disney, Warner bros, Sony, 20th century fox and finally Paramount.

The MPAA are a board of parents with several children who watch and rate the films which are due to be released, depending on the content of the film a rating is given there are 5 different ratings which are G which can be viewed by everyone, PG which is still okay but parents are advised about some of the features in the film, PG-13 is the next one which is anyone under 13 should be accompanied by an adult, Then its R which is restricted no-one under 17 is allowed in as scenes of strong violence/language with some sexual scenes will be in the film, the worst rating a film can get is NC-17 which is only allowed for people over 17 and no younger as the film has strong violence/language

What film made no money

Wild wild west = Although having will smith as one of the main charcters to market the film it still lost money and the box office. The film itself loat around 561,953,19 with a rating of 4.6

Thunderbirds - Thunderbirds with a rating of 4 completly folpped at the box office costing 57million to produce only bringing in 2 million at the box office and a lifetime grossing of 6 million.

Delgo - With a massive buget of 40 million to produce and a very small rating of 4.6 and a massive loss of 35 million this film competly tanked at the opening weekend by only making half a million and the entire lifetime gross being sixhundread thounsand.

The adventures of pluto nash - With a low rating of 3.6 and a massive buget of 100 million this film completely blew at the box office only making 2 million on its opening weekend and 4 million in total life time gross.

Chasing Mavericks - With an avergagly good rating of 6.8 and a tiny buget of 20 million it was suprising that this film tanked at the box office only bringing in a tiny ammount of 2 million on its opening weekend and 6 million in total lifetime gross.

Assignment 3 Unit 26

Analysing Print Poster

image manipulation

It is important to remember that still images can be manipulated.
This has happened a lot in magazine output.

Lots of companies trying to sell products tend to edit pictures to make the product sell better and hook in an auidence.

Text, Font, Size, Colour

*The type of font could connotate certain things for the audience.
It is also important that the audiences can take deeper meanings from the use of colour.
Look at some examples and do a denotation, connotation of them.
(connotate-triggers a meaning of something)

Props and Setting

*A prop is anything that the actor/model picks up or uses and can provide clues about what genre the      product is.
*Settings are where the actors/models are stood. \

Figure Expression and Movement

How an actor or model stands and what facial expression they used can also.

Iconography

There are certain elements of the genre products that when the audience see them, they can be instantly linked to a genre.
These are known as ICONOGRAPHIC FEATURE
This is media treminology for something you already know

Negatives about MPPA

Feedback given if working with big studio if not no feedback given to small indie studios/directors.

R rating vs NC-17 rating = Ruins sales, limits the ability to market the film

Studios only care about making money and getting the max audience which they can but independent film makers aim at particular audience

MPAA accused of censoring films which isn't what they are supposed to be doing. (Forcing someones opinion on the film)

Straight sex scenes get an R rating more than gay sex scenes.

MPPA are homophobic and racist towards lots of films

Nearly 4 times more films get the NC-17 rating is given for sex scenes rather than violence.
This is showing that parents care alot more about young people seeing sexual secnes than people killing one another and fighting.

Give structure on what to watch and what no to watch.

cause of lots of violence is from young people watching violent films and using the same techniques

Pressure groups making the raters decision swayed towards one decision

slight brain washing of people to make people make decisions of what people are like without even meeting or knowing anything about who they are watching.

Appeals wont allow you to use other films to defend your self, board of appeals very private again no names given, some people from church are on appeal board as-well  Have an agenda to stick to giving the film no chance of changing.

clergy role is to attend the appeals and give a vote on wither or not to change the films rating.

appeals process controlled by major film company owners and film distribution companies, also a couple of preits from the catholic church's.
Kirby dick hires investigator to find names. ( unfair on indie film makes) Kimberly Peirce talks about how unfair it was.

Jay landers "not to my knowlegde" if there were any openly gay people on the board.

Bias- not an accurate representation of parents

Steven Farber says no training is given/ no qualifications are required to be a film rater.
What makes these people approprate to rate films?

Unit 30 assigment 1

Who regulates adverts? - Asa
What do the Asa do ? The Asa regulate advert and review them so everyone stays in line and doesnt do anything in their adverts which are offence to anyone, clear cast can pre clear adverts to be shown on the tv. The website tells people the six steps in which they need to do so their advert can be reviewed and hopefully cleared. The asa are working with the brodcast advertising codes which are the rules for what the adverts can contain and what the rules are for different topics such as children rules, privacy rules and prohibited categories.

Adverts which have been banned by the asa are http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kji8qIo8h4I (tango orange man because children were copying what they saw in the advert and injuring themselves.

The second advert which the asa banned was Nhs hooked advert which was seen to be offence, firghtning and distresing for most audicences.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anFK9SA5kKw

The third advert which is banned is Sodastream with scarlett johansson as in the advert she says sorry coke and pepsi. this caused to superbowl not to air the ad due to it trashing the two main soda companies.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxq4ziu-wrI

Homework

Thinkbox helps more modern tv such as sky+  tivo and bt on demand and how they can advertise in the most profitable ways.

The information from thinkbox tells us that there are three distinctive types of audiences which are
  • In between time: often when doing other activities; flit between sets; weekday daytimes
  • My time: 'treat' viewing; often alone; mainly women; lunchtimes and late peak
These show us what different types of people enjoy adverts and which people just flick between them and only watch the shows.

Research.

The advantages of getting a research company like think box is that it can improve an advert and make whatever is being advertised to do better, also it can show the advertiser how other adverts have been so successful and show them how to make an advert which will also be very well known and get the company more global popularity, and it also gives you less work when making the advert so you can focus more on other areas.

A quantitative survey of 3000 people with 22 cameras and also did lab research where they got people in a lab and made them watch multiple adverts.

The strenghts of doing a quantitative survey with 3000 people would be lots of information would be gathered and it would be quite accurate as lots of people are in the survey and also may have a large range as so many people are in the survey so lots of different information was found. The weaknesses of using a qualitative survey would be how long it would take to look through all of the information although all of this information from the survey would be a strength it would also be a weakness due to how long it would take to look through and sort the information. Another strength would be that the information is new and fresh so it is up to date and what people actually think of the adverts right now. The time and money of the survey would be very consuming and if not alot of time is available then the survey may not even have time to finish the survey and leave the data incomplete.

A strength of bringing people into a lab would be that you can look more in depth at people and get a fresh opinion and get what they truly think.

Thinkbox use lots of different research methods which makes their research more reliable and can get the most accurate information.

A rate card in advertising is a document which contains lots of important information about the advert such as prices and description about the ad and where it can be placed and what time it can be shown at.

A rate card is something which is used in the media industry, it tells people the prices and the different placement options which people have when making an advert. It mostly tells people the max price they will have to pay to place there advert somewhere but the price usually drops.
These are examples of some of the different types of rate cards which are used by some companies which use some of these techniques, this also shows the different prices of how much different options can cost for how long you want to advertise

Adverts cost different amounts during which programme is on as if you want 30 seconds of advertising time during xfactor it will cost you 200,000.

Target audience - Fans of James bond and people who enjoy Heineken.
Style - Narrative and showing lifestyle.
Demo and Psycho graphs - The demography would be a large audience of James bond fans but also would be fans of beer and drinking which would make these two audiences the main ones which they are aimed at.
Techniques - being able to-do unreal things make massive card house by flicking cards etc....
Another technique would be the camera and they way in which it has lots of fast cuts to make the advert seem more exciting and energetic so that it keeps the audience intrested and wanting to find out what the advert is advertising.
Characteristics - This is trying to show how this is unique to other beers and what differences it has and why people should drink this instead of other brands.

The camera angles are very mid shotty but also some show the surroundings of what is happening in the scene and showing the different facial and phyical expressions of the characters in the advert.

Target audience - No real clear audience, if anything just people who enjoy silly things and things which are stupid and funny.
Style - the style of the advert is very covert as the advert has nothing todo with what it is advertising which is the mobile phone network 3 but when poeple see that advert they will always think of 3 which is a very clever advertising technique.
The demographic of this advert would probably be most or all the time as the advert is aimed at such a wide audience of people it would be sutible all times and the phycographic of the advert would be very similar to the demogrpahics as the advert is aimed at a large audiences containing lots of different types of people with different lifestyles and tastes.
Techniques - The main technique of this advert is to just show how fun and random the 3 network is and making adverts like the dancing pony people will see the advert and then be able to instantly link them with the company 3 which is what 3 wants to be known for making strange and funny adverts which go viral and people remember them. The sound of this advert is very happy and childish which shows that the advert is mostly aimed at young children who would enjoy the sillyness of the advert and would keep them intrested to watch the full advert.
Characteristics - The characteristics again just make the advert unique and have nothing todo with the company which they are advertising but if you asked someone they could tell you straight away as it is a very memromable advert which is the main characteristic.

Camera angles in this are made to mainly show where the pony is and where the advert is set for example in this case the dancing pony is set in Eshaness in the north of the Shetland Islands which is made very clear with lots of extreme wide shots showing the surroundings and showing the different features so that people will recognise when they see the advert or go to eshaness will think of the three advert and then think of the product which it is advertising which is 3 the mobile network.

Target audience - people who like Guinness bear but also aimed at a younger audience to attract a younger crowd to the beer and expand there audience

Style - the style of this advert is very unique and abstract as it has no clear purpose of being for Guinness but still people remember the advert and what it is linked for
The demographics of this advert would be aimed at probably past 7 o'clock as it would be the prime time for people who would actually would be intrested in the product is being advertised in this case beer, The phycogrpahs however would be different as it would have a large audience of who the advert is aimed at as even though it is advertising beer it has also a very unique and different style to the video which would draw another audience in aswell.
Techniques - This advert again is very unique and doesn't have much to-do with the product but got lots of praise for how the waves were crashing forward like horses, this advert was aimed at getting younger people to buy Guinness and increase the audience so that the company could make more profit this has been done with more Guinness adverts today. This advert also has very quick cuts which make the advert feel quick and fast paced to show that the advert is meant to be exciting and thrilling to keep the audience intrested in watching the advert.
Characteristics - The main characteristic is to get younger audiences interested into drinking Guinness and to get a wider audience to drink Guinness

The camera angles in this advert are very different and unique to other adverts as it makes the advert fadt paced and makes the advert exciting and intresting for the audience so that they rememeber what happened in the advert and also to make the audience remember what the advert is about and also to always link that advert with the product which it is represnting as in this case its guniess beer.

Target audience - The main audience for this advert is obviously car enthusiasts but it also has a different angle as it feature was of the most iconic characters out of the media industry ever, which everyone can recognize just by hearing him breath.
Style - The style of this advert is Selling the lifestyle in a way as in the advert it shows the boy dressed as darth vadar trying to move things with the force and it doesnt work but then when he tries it on the car it does so its kind of saying if you get this car you can use the force on it which is aimed at star wars fans, but it is also just selling the product and showing some of the features in the car which makes it unique again to the other cars on the market
The Demographics of this advert again would mostly be most of the time as again it has many different audiences which it could attract such as car enthuiats for a start, star wars fans due to the star wars theme in the video but also it could aim at families as in the advert is shows a son and a father bonding over the car,The phycographics how ever would have a smaller audience as only the lifestyle for a car like that would have to be medium or over and if someone hated star wars they wouldnt buy the car as it is linked with it so it would have to be medium wealth audience who either dont care about star wars or like it.
Techniques - The main techniques in the advert are pulling on the star wars thing and aiming it to attract that audience to buy this car as it is linked with the franchise in some way even though it is only in the advert
Characteristics -  The characteristic in this advert is to get people who wouldn't normally be interested in cars and more into star wars is to buy a car which the advert shows them can also be linked with star wars

The camera angles in this advert are very similar to other car adverts showing some of the star wars side of the advert the main focus of the advert is to show the different featues which the car has and how they are unique from other cars similar to this one doing lots of close ups and showing highlighting the cars key features and what about the car makes it unique.

Comparison paragraph.

I think the main thing which most adverts have used is to try and be unique to other adverts and make the advert which they are making stick in peoples minds and always link the advert to the product. For example the advert for 3 with the dancing pony, the pony has nothing todo with the phone network or anything todo with phones it self but when people see the advert they instantly think of 3 as people have just made the link with adverts like that always being for 3 and having nothing todo with the product. another good example of this is the cadburys gorrila advert again has absolutley nothing todo with the product of cadburys but people will always link it with the product of cadburys and remember the advert and then remember the product. This is a popular technique with more modern adverts as it had become more popular in modern adverts. Another thing which has been popular in adverts since the start of adverts in the media began, this being using big media starts from other media products such as the volvo ad using star wars to promote one of their new cars, Another good example of this is in the hinekien advert feature daniel craig who was staring in the new james bond film which helped promote hiniken while also helping to promote the film also. Putting popular music in the advert sp that people who like that music are more likely to focus on the advert and what it is talking about. The one thing which all these adverts have in comman is the way they try and be unique and appeal to more than one spesific audience, this is to aim to get more people to buy the product which they are advertising such as in these cases a car a brand of beer, another brand of beer and a mobile phone network. Another thing which all the adverts have in comman is they all have a catchy piece of music in the background so that when people hear that track they will instantly link it with the product of the advert which it is advertising. someone which makes the car advert different from the other adverts is the way in which the advert actually has clear product which it is advertising and the audience understand what is being advertised as in the other adverts they dont really have anything todo with what they are advertsing and only tell the audience what the product is when the advert is over with just one logo of the brand which is being advertised.

Unit 30 -EE assignment interview

Format - All are formal as they are written down with a set to set crtiera
How clear is their message - EE = was very clear and easy for all audiences to understand
IBM = Not clear at first but once we found the vidoes we came to understand what we had todo.
Barcalys = it was not very clear atall as we didnt understand what we had todo for the assignment as the brief was very confusing.
How open each brief is for negotiation - all three have very slight negotiation and nothing more only between the group
What opportunities does it offer you as a media professional  - if you are a winner or a runner up you get put on the ladder which opens up opportunities, projects and career progression days and you also get brand feedback
Which brief do you want to produce - We are going to produce the EE project

we have researched what EE have done in the past about 4g and how they advertised it in many different ways which will help us understand how to advertise 4g but make it unique and not like old EE 4g adverts. Also EE being technology based we all have knowlegde in the technology area about 4g already which will make the advert easy to make so that we know how to best get accross 4g in a way everyone will understand. The majorety of EE adverts are very humorus and this is a key point which we want to focus on in making our advert as this seems to appeal to the main audiene which it is aimed at.

Helping us make this advert we have worked in this group in the past and we know each of our skills which we have and work rate and we think we will be good at making this 4g advert as we would like to make it humourus and unique to us.
We will assign skills which best fit the person in the group for example ben will do the majorety of the acting due to his skills in drama.

Progress review

I feel that in unit 6 i have done more work than what i usally do for assignments, in this unit i have done lots of research on unit 6 about gaming and all the affects etc ... i particulary enjoyed this unit as we got to do what we wanted and enjoyed for example for the prezi i did doctor who a show i particularly enjoy watching. i feel that i haven't really looked in detail at the assignment breifs and don't really try with the first draft assignments but when i begin to write and get into the flow i seem to write lots more than when i am being distracted and not really focusing on the work. i think if i tried harder in doing the assignments i could get a much better grade which i currently am getting in the lesson. i do work outside of the lesson where i seem to get a similar amount of work done at home than i do in college.

Emotional response techniques

Mcvites advert- ahhhh wants the audience to think they are cute and cuddly, also strange dogs in biscuit packet.

Frank cocannie

Shocked and uncomftable also amusing talking dog, draws the attention straight away

Caner awareness

Worried and shocked, dark colour wash

Guiness Advert

Jaguar Advert

excite you, filmed in the style of a regular film, suave and smart brand

Public speeding

Tense shocked, uncomftable, conquences of whats going to happen

Analysing the advert

*Selling the benifits
*better than others
*Highlights usp
*Sell lifestyle
*Brand Culture

Selling lifestyle

highlighting unique selling points which makes the console better than other, another difference is that the xbox one ad is more overt and the berocca one is covert as it does not tell you what the product is until the end of the ad as in the xbox one it says straight away.

1. They both having backing tracks, the differneces are that the xbox one advert is unrealistic and the berocca one is more belivable.

2.The berocca one makes the product seem unique and shows people how it works, as the xbox one gives the product and unqiue and modern edge showing it can do things which the other consoles cannot.

3.The best characteristics i feel are ones that make the product unique and seperates them from the crowd showing how it is better to similar products.

Unit 6 assignment 3 Re submission

In the past few years lots of violence has been linked to video game violence well people think so any way, i am hear to tell you that this claim is wrong and that people are just using video games as a scape goat for problems which are caused in society and cannot handle the blame and wants to blame something else well video games being the perfect candidate, many examples of video games causing violence can be found on the internet such as http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Report-Ties-Real-Life-Mass-Killings-With-Video-Game-Violence-59084.html from this link it explains how mass killings are tied with a video game for example the man who played call of duty and claimed it was training for killing lots of people at a campsite saying the game trained him to do it, which i find absolutely ridiculous as if a game can train a person to do anything and to go as far and to say it can train a person to kill is again ridiculous. Before video games were released people did the exact same thing for films and the media using them as a scape goat for problems which have been caused by society. My opinion on games causing violence is that they don't and they are just something for someone to blame. http://www.theguardian.com/science/brain-flapping/2013/sep/20/video-games-cause-violence-claims-cause-violence -This link tells about how video games can affect the brain and what different affects it can have on different types of people this is a very neutral website as it explains both sides of the argument. The focus group would be useful in the group as it would make the marketing of the product easier as showing which audience would be more into the game and who would make the product sell better if it was aimed at them and not someone who wouldn't buy it like for example the developers of call of duty dont aim there games at six year old girls or 80 year old women they aim it at teenage to young adult males as it contains lots of guns explosions violence which men enjoy.Another example would be nintendogs, you wouldn't aim that at anyone other than young girls as it has lots of elements which they like for example the dog being cute and the game using lots of bright and happy colours.  The main positive again was finding out why a particular audience enjoyed playing call of duty and what key elements they liked about the game and which parts made the game unique to the others in the franchise and why they would buy or have bought the game in the past. It also helped show who the typical audience are for playing call of duty games and what makes up the majority of the audience. http://www.pamf.org/parenting-teens/general/media-web/videogames.html this link tells people about how most games have a positive impact on people and can develop skills early which can benefit the child in early life and can help them when they get older however adolescent girls who played video games were tended to have more anger issues such as

This is one of the many studies which have been done to find out more about this specific gratifications of effects model.  examples of some of these games are, (Grand theft auto - giving the player almost limitless freedom to do whatever they want) (Saints row franchise - again being similar to Grand theft auto it however is much more comical and silly than grand theft auto and just aims to mock games still containing lots of violence, One of the biggest violent games to ever be realised is the whole call of duty franchise showing war with lots of violence and gore which has already been proven multiple times with stories in the news such as http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/sandy-hook-shooter-linked-violent-404576

The media effects model is how people feel that all the different types of media affect the audience that watch them and what the different effects of different people are such as does a violent film make people violent or does a bank robbery film make people more inclined to rob a bank in there life, then general thing about it is how it can if it can effect the mass media audiences behaviour.

The uses and gratification theory is how people use and seek out media to a specific need to satisfy, it is basically looking at how media can satisfiy particular needs of an audience and what different things in media can effect people in different ways and what changes it can make in mass media audiences.
