unit 33 stop-motion Lee hardcastle
What genre is the animation and what generic conventions (things you expect to see) can you pull out?
What do you notice about the movement of the figures body?
What do you notice about the movement of the figures face and facial expression?
What comments can you make about the use of sound?
lLee hardcatle the raid: Style claymation
Audience: Teenagers young adults
The genre of the stop-motion was action by the use of gun props and explosions with also lots of fighting
The movement of the figures looked very complex and had lots of figures moving at once with stiff movement, with all the figures shuffling about as they were made of clay. This is because they are made of clay.
The arms are moved very human like but because they dont have legs they have broken a principal of animation (arcs) for enjoyment and humour, followed arc principal so they could hold the props to create realism
shot cat (follows the principal of gravity)
Facial
Sweat-followed principal of gravity:effect of realism-tension
Facial expression used for attention to detail to make the effect is so we can see the sense of character.
Sound
well synced
gun fire- realism sounds like real gun
cat sounds- cat screaming and dialogue
spx- explosions, blood splatter, siren,
non diagetic sound- backing track.
Old and New.
The main difference in the two stopmotions is the quality level between the two and how significantly is has improved in 60 years and how much smoother and more synced lots of the stuff with the animation is, at 0:37 in the king kong one you can see the stop-motion being projected behind the woman who is acting which makes the stop-motion look very fake and surreal however in the creature comforts one you can see how everything looks very synced and even tho it is made with clay still looks more realistic than the king kong one. Lots of jerky movement in king kong ( 2:05) The model detail is also very different as you can see how much more the models in creature comforts are than in king kong.
The similarities between the two are that they both have surreal aspects in them and also use animals as part of the stop-motion, being in the king kong one with a giant ape and dinosaur are fighting each other and then in the creature comforts one with the animals being able to talk like a human. king kong (1:20) Creature comforts (0:50 ) Background stuff happening in both which is called secondary action. Both claymation and both have similar camera shots of where it is filmed.
It is very easy to spot how much improvement has been made with stop motion in the duration of time since king kong to creature comforts some of these improvements include sound being much more in sync with the visual part of the stop motion and the visual part of the stop motion looking much more realistic even though they are made of clay. The progress which has been made over the past 60 years for stop motion is very impressive and if it keeps improving at the rate which it is at the moment it will look very impressive in the next 60 years and stop-motion today will look very un synced and unreal.
King Kong
Time - (43) bad example not realistic looking atall.
Arc - ( 2:04) Good example of arm arching
Overlapping follow through - (1:01) dinosaurs tail moves without body moving
Gravity - (1:15) King kong throws dinosaur over his shoulder and then the dinosaur falls to the floor
Creature comforts
Time - (26) has the dog sat unrealistic on the sofa
Arc - (26) dog and cat are leaning on there hands with there arms bent as an arch
Overlapping - (17) seagulls tails move on there own away from the body
Gravity - (

Stop-motion (Real people)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmFXhvErLPM
Producer: Two guys who dont know it all
Release date: Aug 2007
Target audience: The target audience for this one would probably be teenagers and young adults and they think that they know everything about everything and they never think that they are wrong which would make most teenagers who watch it able to relate to what is happening in the stop-motion and then they would enjoy it more.
Stop-motion is when an object is moved a tiny bit each frame to simulate like the object is moving when it cannot, when stop-motion was first introduced lots of people thought it was magic how these objects would just move about on there own. the creators of stop-motion Albert E Smith and J. Stuart Blackton first started off making Humpty Dumpty with toys and when this hit they decided to make lots of different ones including A haunted house. Nowadays stop-motion is being used a lot less even tho it is still being used on quite big films such as the corpse bride and caroline it has somewhat died out as the technology is outdated and much better looking things can be animated easier with a lot less work than having over thousands of figures and moving them one by one every frame. however one popular tv programme still uses stop motion, Robot chicken a big and popular tv still uses stop motion in every episode and has no sight in stopping soon.
In the timeline below you can see the development of stop-motion and how much it has changed from the beginnings of the phenakisttoscope to the zoetrope, praxinoscope, kinetoscope and stop-motion and also some of the biggest names in stop motion from the start such as Willis O'Brien, Ray Harryhausen, Aardman animations and Lee hardcastle. There are principals when doing stop-motion animation which are squash and stretch which is when drawn things such as people or animals are given a sense of weight to look like they have actually got that and this also links in with another principal the principal of gravity and how things must follow the laws of gravity to make them look more real, the next principal of animation is Anticipation which is used to prepare the audience for upcoming action and give it more a sense of being real to make it seem more real for the audience for example when you have a golfer before he swings to swing his golf club back to show that he is about to hit it or a runner is getting ready to start running and is leant down readying up. Another principal would be arcs which is when in animation when something moves it looks realistic as the things are or leg forms an arch when it is moved just like it real life to make it look more real and look more real to the audience, Follow through and Overlapping is when in animation something moves without for example in king kong when he is fighting the t-rex he begins to run through the jungle with his arms moving before his legs. Timing is one of the main principals as it can completely change if something looks realistic and something looks fake as anything which is why it is so important for example if you had someone punching someone and then they didn't react for a few frames it would look stupid and wouldn't look realistic to the audience. Some examples of these principals can been seen in the clips below
Title - T shirt war
Creator - Rett and Link
Release date - February 2010
The main audience for this i think would be children and teenagers as it has lots of bright colors which would keep them interested and is eye catching for young children an example of this would be the color of t-shirt which they use throughout the video which consists of lots of different colors shown in the screen shots below

Title-Pingu igloo adventures
Creator Otmarr Gutmann
Release date 1986
The main audience for this programme would be small children around the age of 3 to about 6 as it has lots of things to appeal to that audience such as again bright and nice colors which most children would find welcoming and eye catching and most of the characters on the show have nice and smiley faces which children will find nice and happy and fun to watch. this programme is very good at following the principals of animation as it uses follow through and over lapping very good moving the feet at the same time as the body to make it look realistic as they could, another thing which they stook to well was the gravity principal in the programme as you can see in the clip at (37) when pingu knocks the fruit into the pan it falls as it would normally showing they are following the principal of gravity, one thing which it doesn't follow but is still correct in not following is the arc principal as penguins don't bend there arms or legs like that in real life so it makes it more real having them what they do in real life.
Stop motion has been very much improved since it first began as since the principals of stop motion have been introduced it has been made to look much moe realistic and life like and is still improving today, the one thing however which hasn't changed is how long the stop motion takes to produce as a way has not been found on how to speed this process up yet as in one of the latest stop motion films paranorman it took a massive crew a cosierderably long amount of time to complete but looks considerably realistic. This being compared with some of the first stop motions such as rapunzel and ones similar however this can be seen as a bad thing as people like how the stop motion looks different and chopy and some people liked that but now it has got so realistic and some people dislike this fact. Lots of things can make a production better for using stop motion and lots can make it worse such as if you want it to look chopy and unrealistic then stop motion would be good as you can completely control how your characters move and how they do also but if you want it to look realistic and smooth you wouldn't use stop motion as it would be difficult to make it look realistic, another good point would be with stop motion you can do anything you want in a small place and you don't have to go traveling around places you can make your own location however big you want and can make it look good. I feel that stop motion can be good but is not good in all senses.
Title - Hamster hell
Creator - Lee hardcatle
Release date - "2012
The target audience would be teenagers as it contains lots of adult themes such as violence and death and even though it looks OK for children it would probably upset them due to the graphic nature of the animation, this doesn't follow one of the most important themes in stop motion as the arc on the character well the boy does not get followed as when he walks he waddles and does not follow the principal which makes the animation look unrealistic and fake however it does follow the principal of gravity as when the hamster dreams of being on the death coaster at (2:55) you can see when he reaches the top and is upside down he does exactly what would happen in reality and falls down. The follow through and overlap however is very poor as at (3:41) he only moves the legs when he turns as in real life you also turn your body when you kick something and turn which makes it unrealistic for the audience and makes them lose focus.

skittles advert
Released- March 6th 2011
Target audience - I would say the target audience for this would be children as it uses lots of bright colours to make the audience have lots of eye contact with it and fix in there mind, but it could also be aimed at artist people types as it could inspire some people.

The overlapping and follow through on this stop-motion would be at (36) where the fan on one of there shirts moves without anything else which is a good example, One other key principal is gravity as when one of the shirts has a jenga puzzle on it at (27) it follows the rule of gravity by falling over to the way which it is being blown and falling to the ground not like upwards or anything. The next one which it uses correctly is arches by having them move there arms as you would normally do, one thing however which is wrong would be at (1:24) where one of the shirts catches on fire and ends up burning for much longer than it would without getting bigger which breaks the principal of time.

High definition tv and film
High definition is when something being transmitted is provided with five times as many pixels as normal television and film, the hd trails started way back in 1930s and has come a very far way by improving picture quality and colour to make the media product look the best it could be. (Source :en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_television)
Aspect ratio is a big part of hd as it depends on what quality the media product is at such as if it is higher aspect ratio then the TV or film product is going to look better and if it is smaller it will look worse, it is comanly 2 numbers separated within a colon and can be measured in inches or centermeters. In still photography the ratio is much smaller than on films and TV as the image is. much smaller and is still, the aspect ratio can be changed when someone zooms in during a film or TV programme it will alter the ratio. (En.wikipedia.org/wiki/aspect_ratio_(image)
There are 5 different types of audio signals which are (video, RF aerial,Audio line, speaker and s-video)
The video signals however are much more complex as they have lots more jobs, the most comman ones are composite which sends standard definition signals to your devices and is a composition as why it is called a composite of 3 signals they are used to connected dvd players vcrs to the television unfortunately it is not a hd signal so the quality can be lost when the signal is transmitted. the next signal is called a component signal and is slightly better than an composite as it is not cramed together it is even placed into 3 parts which are the lumonise and the two color channels, one of the only disadvantages is that separate audio is needed when using component . the final and best is hdmi which allows the best quality to be sent to your device such as game consoles and blue ray players despite being the best they would not use hdmi cables in the industry as it would struggle sending the signal through its cabling longer than 10 meters. The one which is mainly used is hdsdi which basically means it can travel the signal up to much greater distances.
Terrestrail television is radio signals used to broadcast using radio signals which are sent to antenias it was used alot when tvs first came out but as things such as digital and cable have come along not many people used them which is why it was turned off.
There are many different ways to record tv shows such as using a dvd player to record them using a sky + box or something similar to one which makes recording shows much easier by being able todo it with a click of one button.
There are lots of different editing softwares out there some of these include
These are the main and most popular ones which are used in the industry but not one is the best all round as they all have things which they are better for such as aftereffects is much better for adding sfx to something where as finalcut pro is better for editing things together and sorting the order of clips. some reviews of the software can be found at (http://www.videomaker.com/article/17345-apple-final-cut-pro-x-101-review) for final cut pro and it says about the positives and negatives of the software and here is one for aftereffects and it talks again about the same (http://www.creativebloq.com/after-effects/review-after-effects-cc-6133284)
I think that hd will always be better over sd as it makes the product look better with clearer sound although you can travel the sound futher with sd it still is shamed when the quality of the hd is synced with the sound https://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20121023211013AAC6xmM this poll shows that much more people would prefer something to be in hd than sd and they give lots of good reasons such as "HD, every kind of game looks better in HD than SD, and all games on PS3/360 run in HD resolution anyway. I didn't get an HDTV until they started to become cheaper a few years ago, before that i used an SD TV with my PS3. When i switched over to the HDTV, everything, even the menus, looked better than they did in SD, it was a big improvement. :)" and "hd,
when i had sd i could barely read the letters and i was so close to the tv too lo"
