Unit 1 assignment 1 RE submission

Time
The production had to take a year to shoot as it was what happens in a year at the particular school, it was important to make deadline for this as it was in one year and they couldn't just film something or re create it next term/year as it would look fake and wouldn't look real which would cause people to think most of the documentary was staged.

What is a Shooting Scheduled

A "Shooting Schedule" is a project plan of each day which you are planning on filming, the Shooting Scheduled is usually made my the assistant director. The shooting schedule tells people about when they are filming what equipment is needed and what they are filming on which day.One of the main reasons why a Shooting Scheduled is so useful is because you can always have a backup plan or plan b just in case something goes wrong like you cannot use the location you were originally going to use or some of the equipment is unavailable, then if you didn't have a back up plan you would waste lots of days missing out on filming just because you didn't have a Shooting schedule and no back up plan.

Why is it important to have a Shooting schedule

It is very important that a shooting schedule is used so that no time is wasted and all the time is used effectively, Another key reason why a shooting schedule is used is to make a back up plan just in case something goes wrong like the location cannot be used or some equipment becomes unuseable, this is very important to make a plan b so that no filming time is wasted as one tiny thing can completly stop the filming of the whole feature.

How long does it take to get music/clip clearance

This short extract tells you about the different types of music and how long each one takes to clear for use (That depends on a few parameters.
First, how complex is your request, there may be a lot of negotiating.
Second, who is the rights owner and where are they? If success has got to their head and they're sipping Margaritas in Waikiki, chances are it will take longer to get an answer.
We are obligated to our clients to find the rights owners and present them with a Clearance Request. We negotiate, explain the project, etc, but the final answer is in the hands of the rights owner, and they are not obligated to anyone.)
The main point these extract is trying to get across is that the more popular and well known the music track the longer it takes to

Personnel

The main people which would of been involved with this project would mainly of been the school as they are the ones which the documentary is about and channel 4 as they are the ones making and funding the documentary to be made, other than that nobody else really as the documentary makers only needed the permission of the school to film around the school and show what life is like in a Yorkshire school.

One of the main concerns which was faced when trying to get permission for filming at the school was the consent of the parents which had to be given so that they could film there children and get a normal look at what life is like in school normally and not people showing off in front of the camera's

Facilities
In educating Yorkshire they used lots of specialist equipment for recording the interviews which they had but most of the filming was done by the schools CCTV and camera's which they set up close to where the CCTV was already in the school

To make a documentary like educating Yorkshire not much equipment is needed really apart from equipment to film the one to one interviews which the documentary makers have with the students and teachers at the school other than that the only other thing which is needed is the schools CCTV footage and camera to record locations around the school where camera's are not.

All the equipment need would cost around 1000-1500 pounds due to the hiring cost of the camera's per day and the lighting and equipment needed during the interviews with staff at the school.

The main importance of having the right kit is to make people act normally like they are not on camera, like in educating Yorkshire if a camera crew were going round the school corridors just walking about with the students also they make act differently to how they normally would i this would not give the affect of what normal school life is like on a normal day.

Materials and copyright
The only other footage used in educating Yorkshire is from the schools CCTV cameras which the school have obviously give permission to channel 4 to go through the schools camera records to pick out specific bits which fit with the programme and shows the audience what actually happens in schools on a daily basis in Yorkshire.

No popular music was used in the show as none was needed as they never had any shots which showed a landscape or anything and the intro for the programme was made and produced by channel 4 itself so no clearance was needed from anyone.

Clearance and Copyright are what people put on their music which they have produced or sung in, this means whenever someone else wants to use their song in a programme or film they have to get clearance from the producer of songwriter before they can put it in the film or TV show, many clearance requests get accepted with some amount of money going to the producer of songwriter however sometimes the song will not be cleared and the film or TV producer will have to completely change a scene around just because the specific music track cannot be used in the film.

However if clearance is needed in a documentary you have to go to whoever produced the piece of music, in some cases you have to go to the label which own the music artist. More information on the clearance of music can be found here http://guru.bafta.org/top-tips/ten-tips-on-music-clearance-for-your-film . One of the main companies who deal with clearance in the uk is the PRS which stands for Pro forming rights society  and they deal with lots of issues mainly in the uk about clearance for music which is used in films.
Most film directors use Royalty free music which in a nutshell is music which you can use as long as you want without having to get clearance from anyone so it makes it much easier and makes the production process go much faster than having to wait weeks for clearance for music which may not even be used in the final production.

Location
The documentary was chosen to be shot at a school as it gives it a more realistic feel to the production and also is ideal for what type of documentary is being shot as it is about what happens in one year in a school in yorkshire. the limits of shooting in a school is the amount of people on the camera at once and is hard to isolate one person at once, also it makes it more complicated having to control that amount of people at one time to be presentable to go on tv.

Materials and Contribution
In the documentary there were not specialist advisors used or interviewed and the only people that were interviewed were people that either work at the school or students that attend the school, the main person which was interviewed throughout the whole documentary was the head teacher of the school as he was the closest thing to a specialist they wanted, in each episode the head-teacher was interviewed but a different student would be focused on in each episode and interviewed for that one episode only and then in the next episode another couple of children would be focused on and changing each episode but one person who was continuously interviewed every episode was the head teacher Mr Mitchell, it is important to get the right people for an interview as it could end up reflecting badly on whatever the documentary is about and then could cause the documentary to get a bad rating and review because of the one bad interview with the wrong person. In educating yorkshire this was definitely taken into account as they were working with teenagers a lot could go wrong however they didn't want to pick people who would only show in one way how people apparently act in that school which would then give a the school a bed representation.

Codes of clearance
Educating yorkshire will have followed lots of the ofcom broadcasting code with examples such as protecting under 18s, harm and offence and religion. These are just a couple of examples of which sections it follows but as it has such a large audience and such a large cast it fits in to a few more

Editors and director
The main directors for educating yorkshire were Andrew-Mackenzie betty and David Clews who looked after and controlled what everyone had to do on the production, to be a director on such a big production you would have to have a portfolio of past work on smaller productions which possibly have been independent or with a smaller crew, another part which is not required but most big time directors have is a bachelors degree in programming films.

The main editors on the production were Mark towns, Christopher swayne and Ana price. the job of the editor is to sort out the footage from the camera and to turn the programme into a proper programme which looks professional and presentable for broadcasting, the qualifications which are needed to be an editor and similar to the ones of a director with a show reel and optional a bachelors degree but being an editor also makes you to be able to work with all different types of editing software and be able to use them efficiently with a good understanding on how to use everything.

Fiance
There are many different ways to get funding in the uk for tv shows such as funding from the channel which it is on for example every programme shown on channel 4 whatever is made on the programme goes back into funding for another programme to be made and the cycle carries on, another way which alot of programme do is with advertisements during the breaks of the programme such as brands for clothing, shops or food products this is one of the most common ways which a tv programme is funded. There is a similar way to this which is called product placement and it is where a product from a particular company such as coke is drank only instead of other soft drinks and only iphones are used instead of other phones because apple have said they will fund the show if they use the product placement of iphones.
